How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck Pain?

Written By LaVallee Chiropractic on February 28, 2018

Neck pain treatment is one of the most common reasons clients come to see us for chiropractic care, and it seems to be a growing trend thanks to one everyday culprit – text neck.

It’s a real thing.

Text neck occurs when you overuse your neck, back, and shoulder muscles by staying in a hunched position for an extended period of time.

This condition is typically caused by looking down at a mobile device for too long, or after other prolonged activities such as reading or using a computer screen at the wrong height.

If not treated properly, it can lead to lifelong pain and cause permanent damage to the cervical spine – especially in growing children.

While it may only cause temporary neck pain and discomfort, text neck can lead to serious health issues, such as long-term forward neck posture, disc herniation, and pinched nerves.

Some studies have even indicated a link between text neck and early onset of arthritis in the neck.

The increased incidence of this condition should come as little surprise with a recent study showing that almost 80% of 18 to 44-year-olds have their cell phones on hand for all but two hours of their waking day.

Fortunately, chiropractic care has been found to be a very effective treatment for text neck pain – and unlike prescription drugs, most chiropractic treatment addresses the cause of pain, not just the symptoms.

How Do I Know If I Have Text Neck?

The most common symptom of text neck is neck pain ranging from discomfort and tightness to severe strain.

However, it may also present itself in other areas of the body including the upper back and shoulder in the form of tightness, pain or spasms.

You may even experience headaches or radiating pain in your arms and hands.

Preventative Neck Pain Treatment

Like any medical condition, prevention is the best treatment for neck pain.

Holding your cell phone, tablet, or other device at eye level as much as possible will reduce the strain on your neck.

You should also take frequent breaks from your device throughout the day and ensure any computer screens are set up in a way that you’re looking straight forward, not looking down.

If you spend a lot of time at the computer or on your devices, regular chiropractic care can help improve your everyday function and avoid long-term damage, even if you don’t have neck pain now.
